Based on the novel by Walter Kirn, Up in the Air with George Clooney playing the lead role of corporate layoff expert Ryan Bingham concentrates on interpersonal relationships. Bingham is taken on to help ease the downsizing of long-term employees all over the USA. He is serious about demonstrating his proficiency and looks forward to the 290 days he is going to be away. However, within this period of time his world alters drastically. On the way, both he and his college graduate colleague Natalie played brilliantly by A. Kendrick understand that they lack many important things in their lives and have to learn how to turn into better people. Clooney's Bingham is a lonesome business person whose personal life is made up by random dates with attractive women at multiple airports where he is a regular passenger. His wallet is full of credit cards from airlines that accumulate his mileage, hotel status perk cards which let him avoid dealing with disgruntled passengers and go straight to the front. Having been uninvolved in the life of family for years, Ryan is the brother who exists but cannot give a shoulder to cry on. His job replaces family for him. He reckons whether he should, or really would like to, attend his sister's wedding – the girl whose life he should have been involved with after the death of their father. The story contains a lot of plot lines, details and sequences that are to be seen fresh to get a grip on the film. What you may initially think is a witty comedy about a haughty guy who eventually becomes a pleasant man full of heart and emotion is actually a mix of comedy and drama. George Clooney gives a brilliant performance and makes his character very realistic. He seems to experience all the emotions of his character when playing both the snobbish workaholic obsessed by his job and career prospects and the vulnerable romantic able to demonstrate true feelings of affection and sympathy to people around. The drastic changes he undergoes throughout the film are interesting to trace and make you think about the genuine values of human life.
